HDMI & DisplayPort Bandwidth & Max Hz Calculator
If your monitor only shows 60 Hz or 120 Hz instead of 144 Hz, 165 Hz, or 240 Hz, the bottleneck is often the HDMI or DisplayPort interface generation. Select your resolution, refresh rate, and bit depth to check compatibility.

Frequently asked questions about HDMI & DisplayPort refresh limits
Can HDMI 2.0 run 1440p at 144 Hz?
Yes, HDMI 2.0 (14.4 Gbps effective payload) supports 2560 × 1440 at 144 Hz with 8-bit color. However, if you enable 10-bit HDR or step up to 165 Hz / 240 Hz at 1440p, HDMI 2.0 runs out of bandwidth and you should switch to DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.1.
Why is my 144 Hz monitor locked to 60 Hz over HDMI?
Many older HDMI cables or monitor HDMI 1.4 ports limit 1080p or 1440p high-refresh modes, or the GPU driver defaults to a 60 Hz TV timing mode. Connect via a DisplayPort cable and select the PC resolution list in NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Adrenalin.
